Personal diplomacy on the highest level

What role do heads of states’ personal preferences and character traits play in International Relations? This is the driving question motivating the current research of our Managing Director, PD. Dr. Hendrik W. Ohnesorge.

A personal meeting between US president Donald Trump and the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanjahu gave occasion for the Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) to interview Dr. Ohnesorge regarding these exact questions.

The SRF was interested in the pratice and customs of personal diplomacy between heads of state, especially concering Trumps personality. Many visits by western statesmen and -women display a baffeling similar procedure. Most of them act deferential and try to avoid any confrontation, even as Trump criticizes them or their countries policies. What drives them to display this behavior? Which strategic considerations could be behind it? And what effect could it have on International Relations? Read the brief summary (Link) or listen in on the whole conversation (Link) on the SRFs website.
